Robert Wood, American Artist, (1889-1979)
Style: Impressionist Landscapes
Oil on canvas, this seascape is from the artist’s Laguna Beach period (mid-20th century). Framed in a period rustic driftwood style frame.
Listed in Davenport’s, Robert William Wood (1889-1979) was a prolific and accomplished artist. Although born in England, Robert Wood probably painted more landscapes/seascapes of America than any other artist of his time including Texas, the Rocky Mountains and California seascapes. Although he lived in the bohemian artist’s colony of Laguna Beach, California for little more than a decade, it was his most productive period and the time when he reached the height of his fame. For many, Robert Wood’s name will forever be linked with Laguna’s famous Festival of the Arts. Wood first exhibited at the festival in 1948 and immediately became one of its main attractions. From 1949 to 1951 he lived on the east coast but on his return to Laguna in 1951 he became an active exhibitor again with his final exhibition at the festival in 1959. He died in Bishop, California in 1979. In spite of Wood’s many images of America, he will be forever linked with his iconic marine paintings of Laguna Beach.
