Nephrite jade cicada carving of very fine quality. It has a drill hole at the top to allow wearing as a pendant. Excellent hetian nephrite jade in fine condition with no chips or cracks. Measures approximately 3.25 inches long and 2.25 inches in diameter. Weighs 82.3 grams. In Chinese mythology the cicada was a symbol of rebirth and was often found in tombs. This carving is a good example of the archaistic tradition or fanggu. The antiquarian spirit that inspired the scholars and court during the Song and Ming Dynasties and earlier Chinese cultures encouraged the Imperial workshops to follow the styles and specifications recorded in ancient documents. The artists created works of art that offered their own interpretation of ancient forms and motifs with a nod to the taste of earlier cultures. In this same manner, this bangle is an example of archaistic jade carving based on the Neolithic New Stone Age culture of Liang Zhu which dates from 3300 to 2250 BC.. It has very fine carving and is a russet color typical of the Liang Zhu jades. While it is possible that this bangle does date from the Neolithic era, its pristine condition leads one to believe that it is a very fine archaistic tribute to an earlier culture dating from a later date. The Liang Zhu people must have placed great value on jade, judging by the high number and outstanding quality of jades found in their tombs.
