Rare 18th century plaster Grand Tour casting of cupid with a lion, mounted on velvet and recently framed in an ornate platinum finish frame in keeping with the period. This is a shadow box style frame without glass so that the fine details of the cast are clearly visible.
Castings of various classical subjects became popular after the excavation of Herculaneum and Pompeii in the 18th century Georgian period and were collected as souvenirs of the Grand Tour. The Grand Tour was the traditional trip to Europe undertaken by mainly upper-class European young men of means. The custom flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transit in the 1840s, and was associated with a standard itinerary. It served as an educational rite of passage.
