A rare and unusual natural Baltic black amber bead necklace, 22 inches in length with an amber screw clasp. Black amber is very dense in color but when held to a strong light it reveals very deep reddish brown color from the natural tree resin from which it formed. Amber dates back 40 to 60 million years to the time when dinosaurs walked the earth. It is a magical substance and one of the first gemstones used by humans. The beads range in size from 16 to 24 mm. The necklace weighs 109 grams.
A bit about the colors of amber:
Today there are more than 250 different shades and 7 main colors of Amber identified. They vary from yellow to orange brown, rare red, green and blue and even black and white. There are two main factors, which influence Amber’s color. One of these factors is bubble inclusions that are found in this natural resin. The main explanation why these bubbles affect color of Amber is because they block light that goes through this gemstone. These small disturbances in lighting is what cause Amber to form in different colors. The second main factor that determines color of this natural resin is the tree source. Research on fossil resin indicates that some colors are found only in certain tress. When you look closely at black amber with a strong light you can see the color is likely a very dark brown or reddish brown. Black amber accounts for about 15I of mined amber.
