This is a beautiful archaistic nephrite jade brush rest in the form of a sword scabbard hook. While it was intended for use on a scholar's desk, it can also be worn as a unique vertical pendant by looping a chain or cord through the opening.Free cord included on request. The color of the nephrite jade is a grayish white. It has a silky feel and a nice fatty luster. This piece dates from the late Qing Dynasty about late 1800s to early 1900s. It measures approximately 2.75 inches long, .75 inches wide, and weighs 31.6 grams. During the 19th century it became popular to pay homage to ancient jade forms by adapting them for use on a scholar's desk, as in this piece. Scholars used dry ink in a solid cake form which required the use a a brush and water pot. When not in use, the brush could rest on the jade brush rest. (I am also offering a nephrite jade brush washer/ink pot as a separate listing.
