A Hetian nephrite jade carving of fish and sea life. Dates from the Qing Dynasty, 1800s or earlier. The color is a pale celadon green. Very fine carving on both back and front. Measures approximately 5 inches high; 4.25 inches wide and weighs 8.8 ounces. In Chinese mythology the fish has deep cultural symbolism referring to an abundance of wealth and prosperity. This carp or koi  fish carving symbolizes strength and resilience as koi often swim upstream and overcome obstacles with relative ease. Koi are also known for their beauty and this carving makes a fine addition to a jade collection or displayed as artistic  home decor with  historical significance.
