This is a very fine museum quality 18th century cognac Baltic amber necklace which has been in my family for generations. The women of my family were avid collectors of amber since the early 1700s and this necklace was passed down through the generations. It is now time to pass it to another family. These amber beads are cut in the antique shape known as "zotten" with flat ends and an elliptical disk shape with facets on the edges. The largest bead is approximately 30 mm graduating in size toward the back. The beads show the desirable patina of age with some surface crazing. The necklace measures 36 inches long and weighs 160.2 grams. In the 1990's it was restrung on silk with hand knotting between each bead and a sterling push slot clasp was added.
Amber is the fossilized resin of now extinct pine trees dating back 40 to 60 million years to a time when dinosaurs walked the earth. Many people believe amber has healing qualities, and it has a mystical aura associated with it. Touching amber is touching time itself.
